The Army Achievement Medal\u2014most people just call it the AAM\u2014is given for meritorious service or achievement that’s worth formally recognizing.<\/span><\/p>

So does it actually mean something? It does, but context matters. The AAM is a commonly awarded Army decoration, so it isn’t one of the highest or rarest decorations. Even so, if a soldier got one, they did something the Army thought was worth putting on record.<\/span><\/p>

There’s also a practical side to it. Soldiers working toward Sergeant or Staff Sergeant get 10 promotion points for an AAM.<\/span><\/p>

But honestly, for most soldiers and their families, what matters more than where it sits in the order of precedence is the story behind it\u2014why it was actually earned.<\/span><\/p>

What Is the Army Achievement Medal?<\/b><\/h2>

The AAM has been around since 1981. It exists for meritorious service or achievement that doesn’t quite rise to the level needed for an Army Commendation Medal.<\/span><\/p>

Per Army regulations, it can go to members of the U.S. Armed Forces, and even to members of a friendly foreign nation’s armed forces, as long as they distinguished themselves while serving alongside the Army.<\/span><\/p>

Basically, the AAM is for something that deserves more than a pat on the back. It goes into the official record and stays part of that soldier’s military history.<\/span><\/p>

The tradition remains sacred across all branches of the United States Armed Forces. Each branch has its own distinct medal types. There are other medals that can be granted by any branch. The total number of medals has increased dramatically with more than 50 different types.<\/span><\/p>

Earning a medal is an immensely significant achievement for any soldier. One such military medal officers can hope to earn while beginning their careers is the Achievement Medal. In addition, the Department of Defense authorizes a fifth version for joint activities between more than one branch.<\/span><\/p>

The Achievement Medal was introduced to recognize the exceptional accomplishments or meritorious service of enlisted personnel. These personnel sat below the rank of colonel and were not eligible for the Commendation Medal or the Meritorious Service Medal. Is It a Big Deal?<\/b><\/h2>

Yes, even though it’s a fairly common decoration, it’s still formal recognition, on paper, of meritorious service. And there’s that 10-point promotion bump for eligible soldiers.<\/span><\/p>

It ranks below things like the Army Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Bronze Star, and pretty much anything tied to heroism. But that doesn’t make what it represents any less real.<\/span><\/p>

For a soldier getting their very first personal decoration, an AAM can end up being one of the more memorable moments of their career.<\/span><\/p>

And there’s always a story attached. Maybe it was exceptional work on an assignment, standout performance during an exercise, or something else that just stood out enough for someone to put it in writing.<\/span><\/p>

That’s part of why the citation or certificate ends up mattering just as much as the medal: It’s the part that actually explains what happened.<\/span><\/p>
