For about thirteen weeks, you’ve had letters and not much else. Graduation week is when that ends.

If this is your first Marine Corps boot camp graduation, figuring out Family Day, graduation morning, base access, and everything in between can feel like a lot. The good news is that once you know what to expect, the trip becomes much easier to plan.

Here’s what families should know about graduation week at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, from that first glimpse during the Motivational Run to the moment your Marine finally walks back to you.

Because schedules, base access requirements, and other details can change, always check the official MCRD Parris Island Graduation page before you travel.

The short answer

Families typically arrive for Family Day on Thursday, beginning with the Motivational Run and followed by time with their new Marine on base.

Graduation takes place Friday morning on the parade deck. After the ceremony and release by their company, new Marines can generally leave with their families.

Bring the identification required by the depot, arrive early, wear comfortable shoes, and be prepared for South Carolina weather.

Most importantly, enjoy it. You’ve waited a long time for these two days.

Find Your Frame

Before you travel to Parris Island

Confirm the graduation date

Start with the graduation information provided by your recruit and verify it against the depot’s posted schedule before making final travel plans.

Training dates can change if a recruit is delayed because of an injury, illness, or training requirement, so refundable hotel and travel reservations are a smart choice.

Book your hotel early

Beaufort and Port Royal are the closest areas to Parris Island and can fill quickly during graduation weeks.

Families also stay farther out in Hilton Head or Savannah, depending on their travel plans and how far they’re comfortable driving.

Once you have a graduation date, don’t wait too long to reserve a room.

Check the current base access requirements

Before leaving home, review the depot’s visitor and identification requirements.

Adults should bring the identification required for base access, and drivers should have the appropriate vehicle documents with them. Requirements can change, so check the official MCRD Parris Island Base Access information the week before your trip rather than relying on what worked at a previous graduation.

Watch the weather

Parris Island is on the South Carolina coast, which means graduation weather can range from hot and humid to rainy and windy.
