A United States burial flag is 5 feet by 9.5 feet. Bigger than most people expect.

Most families have a 3-foot by 5-foot flag somewhere in the house — off a porch, maybe, or leftover from a parade. That’s not the size you’re dealing with here. And the gap between the two matters most once the flag is folded down into its triangle. If you’re shopping for a display case, the size of the original flag is really the only thing you need to nail down before you buy.

Here’s the practical problem: a case made for a 3-foot by 5-foot flag will not hold a funeral flag correctly. It’s the wrong shape entirely, not just a little snug.

Why Is a Burial Flag So Large?

The burial flag — some people call it an interment flag, others a casket flag — is sized to drape the entire casket during a veteran’s funeral.

The blue field sits over the left shoulder. The stripes run down toward the foot of the casket.

When military funeral honors wrap up, the honor guard folds the flag thirteen times into that familiar triangle and hands it to the next of kin. It’s a moment a lot of families remember clearly, even years later. And for many, that folded triangle becomes the single most meaningful object to come out of the whole service.

What Size Is a Folded Burial Flag?

Folded down, a 5′ x 9.5′ burial flag usually measures somewhere around 21 to 22 inches across the long edge, and about 11 inches tall.

It varies a bit. A flag folded tight by an honor guard sits more compact than one that’s been unfolded and refolded a few times at home — the fabric and the tightness of the fold both play into the final thickness.

So don’t measure your own flag and shop off that number. Instead, look for a case that specifically says it fits a:
