The Air Force Achievement Medal is an official military decoration recognizing outstanding achievement or meritorious service.

Today, its official name is the Air and Space Achievement Medal, or ASAM. If you’re looking at older military records, you may still see Air Force Achievement Medal or AFAM.

Digging through older paperwork? You’ll probably run into Air Force Achievement Medal, or just AFAM. That was the name before 2020, and it’s not wrong, it’s just old. Same award either way.

What Is the Air Force Achievement Medal?

It started in 1980, under the name Air Force Achievement Medal. Then on November 16, 2020, the Department of the Air Force renamed it the Air and Space Achievement Medal — a nod to the fact that the Space Force exists now too.

So depending on when the paperwork was written, you’ll see either name. Older files say AFAM. Newer ones say ASAM. Same medal underneath.

Who Can Receive the Air and Space Achievement Medal?

Qualifying personnel at O-5 and below can receive it, for outstanding achievement or meritorious service.

Sometimes that’s one specific thing someone did. Sometimes it’s a whole stretch of service that actually moved the needle.

For a lot of Airmen and Guardians, this is the first time their work gets put on the record like that. Officially, in writing, from leadership.

Is the Air Force Achievement Medal a Big Deal?

Short answer: yes.

It’s a real, official personal decoration — not a participation thing.

It isn’t one of the Air Force’s highest decorations, but earning one is still meaningful recognition of a service member’s work.

Getting one means somebody’s performance stood out enough that leadership decided to put it on paper.

And for the person who actually earned it? The meaning usually isn’t really about the medal. It’s the assignment behind it. The people. Whatever’s written in that citation. The day it got handed over.

That’s the part that sticks. Long after the ceremony’s over.

What Is Higher Than the Air Force Achievement Medal?

The Air and Space Commendation Medal sits above it.

Same 2020 renaming applies there too — so older records might say Air Force Commendation Medal, or AFCM.

The two medals recognize different things. Different levels of achievement, service, sometimes heroism. And here’s a detail worth knowing: the Achievement Medal may also recognize acts of courage that don’t rise to the level required for the Commendation Medal.

Honestly, if you’re trying to understand what someone’s award actually meant, skip the precedence chart. Read the citation instead. That’s where the real story is.

What Does the Air Force Achievement Medal Look Like?

Eleven cloudlike shapes form the outer border. In the middle: thunderbolts and wings, pulled straight from the Air Force seal.

The ribbon’s silver-gray, with ultramarine-blue stripes running through it.

Here’s a fun one — even though the medal’s officially called the Air and Space Achievement Medal now, flip it over and the back still says “Air Force Meritorious Achievement.” Nobody’s updated that part yet.

Oak leaf clusters show up on the ribbon for repeat awards, and depending on how it was earned, other devices might be authorized too.

AFAM vs. ASAM: Are They the Same Medal?

Yep. Same medal. Just two names, depending on the year.
