For about thirteen weeks, you’ve had letters and not much else. Graduation week is when that ends.
If this is your first Marine Corps boot camp graduation, figuring out Family Day, graduation morning, base access, and everything in between can feel like a lot. The good news is that once you know what to expect, the trip becomes much easier to plan.
Here’s what families should know about graduation week at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, from that first glimpse during the Motivational Run to the moment your Marine finally walks back to you.
Because schedules, base access requirements, and other details can change, always check the official MCRD Parris Island Graduation page before you travel.
The short answer
Families typically arrive for Family Day on Thursday, beginning with the Motivational Run and followed by time with their new Marine on base.
Graduation takes place Friday morning on the parade deck. After the ceremony and release by their company, new Marines can generally leave with their families.
Bring the identification required by the depot, arrive early, wear comfortable shoes, and be prepared for South Carolina weather.
Most importantly, enjoy it. You’ve waited a long time for these two days.
Before you travel to Parris Island
Confirm the graduation date
Start with the graduation information provided by your recruit and verify it against the depot’s posted schedule before making final travel plans.
Training dates can change if a recruit is delayed because of an injury, illness, or training requirement, so refundable hotel and travel reservations are a smart choice.
Book your hotel early
Beaufort and Port Royal are the closest areas to Parris Island and can fill quickly during graduation weeks.
Families also stay farther out in Hilton Head or Savannah, depending on their travel plans and how far they’re comfortable driving.
Once you have a graduation date, don’t wait too long to reserve a room.
Check the current base access requirements
Before leaving home, review the depot’s visitor and identification requirements.
Adults should bring the identification required for base access, and drivers should have the appropriate vehicle documents with them. Requirements can change, so check the official MCRD Parris Island Base Access information the week before your trip rather than relying on what worked at a previous graduation.
Watch the weather
Parris Island is on the South Carolina coast, which means graduation weather can range from hot and humid to rainy and windy.
Bring:
- Water
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Comfortable walking shoes
- A light rain layer or umbrella if rain is in the forecast
If you’re attending during the warmer months, plan for heat and limited shade.

Parris Island Family Day: What to Expect Thursday
They’ve already earned the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor
Here’s something first-time families are often surprised to learn.
By the time you arrive on Thursday, your recruit has already completed the Crucible, the final 54-hour test of recruit training, and received the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor in an emblem ceremony held about a week before graduation. That ceremony is the moment the title is earned, and the first time their drill instructors call them Marines.
So you’re not coming to see a recruit.
You’re coming to see a Marine.
The Motivational Run
For many families, the Motivational Run is the first time they’ve seen their new Marine in months.
The graduating companies run past families in formation, chanting as they go. It happens quickly, but it’s one of those moments you’re unlikely to forget.
Arrive well before the published start time. Parking, security, and walking to the viewing area can take longer than expected.
And have your camera ready, but don’t spend the entire moment watching through your phone. You’ve waited a long time to see them.
Family Day liberty
Once the morning activities wrap up and liberty begins, families usually get several hours together on the depot.
Your Marine will still need to follow the company’s rules and return at the required time, so let them guide the day.
Many families:
- Get something to eat
- Walk around the depot
- Visit the museum
- Stop at the Marine Corps Exchange
- Take family photos
- Find somewhere quiet and simply catch up
Don’t be surprised if your new Marine seems a little different at first. After months of training, many are more formal, more focused, and still very much in training mode.
Mostly, give them time to talk.
What to bring on Family Day
Keep it simple.
Bring your identification, camera or phone, comfortable shoes, water, and a way to pay for meals or purchases.
Avoid bringing your Marine things they’ll have difficulty taking back with them. If you have gifts waiting at home, they can enjoy them after graduation.
Parris Island Graduation Day: What to Expect Friday
Graduation morning moves quickly.
One minute you’re watching the companies march onto the parade deck, and the next you’re trying to find your Marine in the crowd.
The graduation ceremony is traditionally held at Peatross Parade Deck. Families who want good seating should plan to arrive early and allow plenty of time for parking, security, and walking to the stands.
During the ceremony, the graduating companies march onto the parade deck, colors are presented, awards and honor graduates are recognized, and the ceremony formally marks the completion of recruit training.
Then comes the part families have been waiting for.
The Marines are dismissed.
And they come to you.
Taking photos at graduation
Bring your camera or phone and make sure it’s charged before you arrive.
You’ll probably want photos during the ceremony, but some of the best ones will happen afterward when you’re finally together.
Before bringing photography equipment beyond a standard camera or phone, look up the depot’s rules on spectator areas, equipment, and prohibited items first.
After the ceremony
Once the company releases them, new Marines head out with their families.
Confirm the exact plan with your Marine on Family Day, since they’ll have the latest instructions from their company.
Graduation week also leaves families with keepsakes that often become just as meaningful over time as the photos on their phones, including the graduation certificate, platoon photograph, and formal portraits.
If you’re already thinking about how to preserve them, explore our Marine Corps frames and displays or a military medal and picture frame that can bring a favorite portrait and military recognition together.
What to Wear to Parris Island Graduation
There’s no need for families to dress formally, but most people dress a little nicer than they would for an ordinary day out.
Think school graduation rather than black tie.
Collared shirts, dresses, skirts, slacks, or polished casual clothing all work well. The bigger consideration is comfort.
You’ll likely be walking on pavement and grass, sitting outside, and dealing with whatever weather South Carolina gives you that morning.
Comfortable shoes are a very good idea.
During warmer months, lightweight clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat can make a big difference.
After You Get Home
Graduation weekend feels like it takes forever to arrive and then goes by remarkably fast.
Once the bags are unpacked and life starts moving again, you’ll probably have a small collection of things you don’t want disappearing into a drawer: the graduation certificate, platoon photo, formal portraits, and eventually ribbons, medals, and other pieces of your Marine’s service.
That’s when families start deciding what deserves a permanent place at home.
A Marine Corps certificate frame can preserve the graduation certificate and turn it into something your Marine can display for years.
The same goes for the dress blues portrait. A Marine Corps photo frame gives that classic 8 x 10, or a favorite shot from graduation weekend, a permanent spot right beside the certificate.

And as your Marine’s career continues, medals, photographs, certificates, challenge coins, and other keepsakes can become part of a larger military display or gallery wall.

Yes. The depot has streamed graduation ceremonies on its official Facebook page, which is a welcome option for family and friends who can’t make the trip.
